A militia artillery officer's sword retailed by Horstmann
circa 1821-50
Straight 30 1/2 inch single edged blade with broad, full-length fuller below the spine and 12 inch blued and gilt panel engraved with small, conventional motifs. Brass hilt comprising downturned shell molded with C-scrolls framing a Federal eagle, quillon with eaglehead finial, quillon block with horned grotesque mask, knucklebow molded with scrolls and foliage and helmet pommel facing forward. Mother-of-pearl gripscales bound with brass wire. Brass two-ring scabbard with frog stud and engraved with oak leaves, acanthus and spearpoints; reverse marked 425/Horstmann.
Condition: Blade with dark, mottled patina showing areas of light spotting and retaining much of the partially faded blued and gilt decoration. Hilt with dark patina, the reverse of the shell retaining much of the gilt finish. Grip sidestraps with traces of gilt finish, one gripscale chipped above the ferrule. Scabbard with traces of gilt finish around frog stud and showing a few minor dents.
