A French officer's saber
circa 1800
Curved 30 inch blade with broad 26 inch fuller; lower 10 inches of blade blued with small engraved and gilt panels of florals, panoplies and sun-in-splendor, the ricasso signed N K. Silver-plated brass stirrup hilt with downcurving quillon, sides of the guard fluted, shaped knucklebow and fluted, semi-spherical pommel. Checkered ebony grip. Leather scabbard with silver-plated brass fittings.
Condition: Blade showing patches of light pitting towards the point and retaining nearly all the blued and gilt decoration. Hilt and scabbard mounts with dark patina, the hilt with generous traces of silver plating remaining. Grip with crack to one side. Scabbard mounts with dark patina showing generous traces of silver plating, the leather with surface crazing, the saber not fitting completely into the scabbard.
