An 18th century French small sword
Slender 30 3/4 inch blade of hollow triangular section, the forte engraved with scrolls and strapwork. Brass hilt comprising: bilobate guard, the shells pierced with a design of roped circles framing suns-in-splendor; ringed quillon block, one side molded with a Wild Man with club, the reverse with seated figure; knucklebow molded with scrolls; ovoid pommel molded with scrollwork and figures brandishing weapons, one astride a bird. Hilt wrapped with plaited copper wire and copper ribbon.
Condition: Blade with dark patina showing some light pitting. Hilt retaining traces of gilt finish. Hilt decoration worn, the pommel slightly loose, the tang underneath possibly damaged.
