A German Sword of Justice blade
dated 1750
The broad 46 inch blade with squared point; above the hilt 10 inch fullers engraved with couplets in German below scrollwork and perching birds, one side inscribed Wann Dem Armen Sunder wirdt Abgesprochen Das Leben/So Wird Er Mir Unter Meine Handt Gegchen 1750, and flanked by panels engraved with strapwork, palmettes and crowned suns-in-splendor; above this the figure of a headsman with raised sword behind the kneeling condemned; the reverse inscribed Eine Mutter Alles Recht und Billigkeit/Bin Ich Drum Werdt Genandt Die Gerechtkeit; above this the figure of Justice. Now fitted with modern wooden hilt.
Condition: Grey metal showing some patches of light pitting, the engraving very clear.
