An English officer's sword
third quarter 17th century
The 29 1/2 inch double-edged German blade with 8 inch central fullers at the forte and marked on both sides with a large crown-and-orb mark above the fuller, each of which are stamped 1555 within decorative groups of semi-circular marks. Robust steel hilt with bilobate guard and knucklebow with two curved branches above the hilt; the quillon tip, outer rims of guard and swelled center of knucklebow chiseled with fleur-de-lys panels; large ovoid pommel chased with panel of leafage encircling the capstan base; grip retaining original copper wire turk's heads and wire binding.
Condition: Metal with smooth dark patina showing some light spotting/minor pitting, the blade with one long, shallow nick.
