A Dutch officer's sword
third quarter 17th century
The 31 inch double-edged blade of oval section slightly flattened at the forte and stamped on both sides with three crown-and-orb marks and groups of X's, one side with I C - I. Steel hilt of Walloon form, the bilobate guard with raised rims and traces of engraved decoration on both sides; downcurved quillon with button finial; knucklebow with two short, curved branches connected to the guard; ovoid pommel; grip of rectangular section retaining what appears to be the original silver wire binding.
Condition: Metal with mottled grey patina showing wear and areas of pitting; point re-shaped.
