A continental Walloon-hilted military broadsword
2nd half 17th century
Unmarked 35 inch double-edged blade of oval section. Steel hilt comprising asymetrical heart-shaped guard pierced with small, circular holes; knucklebow with inner and outer branches, all with central fluted swell; knucklebow and outer branch screwed to the ovoid pommel; faceted grip bound in straight and plaited steel wire with plaited wire turk's heads, the wrap old and probably original.
Condition: The whole with smooth, dark grey patina; blade with rounded point and a few nicks to edge.
