An Indian katar
probably Deccan, 18th century
Slightly curved 10 1/4 inch blade with thickened point, the broad fuller chiseled at the base with arabesque panels and at the top with small leaf forms. Hilt comprising curved and cusped blade support; flared side straps retaining much of the original gold overlay, the tips pierced with scrollwork; the grip with two central fluted sections supported by panels pierced with confronted animals.
Condition: Blade with some small areas of pitting/discoloration. Hilt retains perhaps 60% plated finish, mainly on the side straps and showing areas of bubbling; the balance showing dark corrosion; blade support with later gold overpainting.
