An Ottoman yataghan
probably Balkans, late 18th century
The 24 inch recurved blade of familiar form, one side engraved with an inscription and the date 1198AH (1784AD), reverse engraved with small cartouche. Brass hilt, the ribbed bolster with reinforcing plate extending over base of blade; grip scales of dark green horn, the pommel with large, flared ears. Black leather-covered scabbard with simple iron mounts.
Condition: Blade with scattered light pitting; horn showing minor splits and marks; scabbard leather heavily scuffed, the mounts with dark patina.
