Inaga ("whitebait" jade)

Private Belgian Collection

Made of inaga jade, the most sought after type of jade as it is the rarest and most precious type of jade within the Maori culture, this object is an example of an adze possibly being worked into a pendant or hei tiki and is undoubtedly pre-contact as evidenced by the beginning of sand and flax cord "saw" marks on the surface.
