"The piling-up of forms - with the animal at the base even carved as though having difficulty in supporting the superstructure - is typical of southern Luba work of the period of contact, from about 1890 to, say, 1925. Somewhat similar to it in spirit are two carvings illustrated in Olbrechts, 1946, plate XX, figs. 101 and 103 (the first of which is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)." (William Fagg, Christie's Tribal Art, December 1 1982: p 51)
