Baule Spoon, Ivory Coast
length 7 3/4in (19.7cm)
Wood
Provenance:
B.C. Holland, Chicago
Private Collection, Michigan
"These were used for eating, I was told, especially by old people who had lost their teeth. There are too many beautifully carved spoons in good condition, however, for this to have been the general rule. Few show heavy use, and there is no plain utilitarian version. One must conclude that these were mainly carved like pulleys, 'so that people would talk about them.'" (Vogel, 1997: p 277)
