Auction Notices

  • These two paintings are most likely depictions of the Hungarian Revolt of 1848. Each picture has a label inscribed 'Bem - Petofi' on the stretchers. Jozef Bem (1794 -1850) and Sandor Petofi (1823 -1849) were both key figures in the war for independence from the Austrian Empire; Bem was a Polish general and a national hero of Poland and Hungary and Petofi was a Hungarian poet and liberal revolutionary who fought under Bem in the Transylvanian army against Austria.
