The frame with outset corners and inset with eglomisé panels, height of portrait 4 1/4in, together with an engraving of the original portrait, sheet 12 1/2 x 9in.

  • Franz Wilhelm Kreuchauff (1727-1803), was author of several books on art including Historische Erklaerung en der Gemaelde, welche Herr Gottfried Winkler in Leipzig gesammlet (Historical explanation of the paintings collected by Gottfried Winckler in Leipzig.)

    Kreuchauff was a merchant in Leipzig and collector of copper plate engravings. He was described by Goethe "an amateur with a practised eye, who, as the friend of the whole society of art, might regard all collections as his own."
