    Gerald Nordland served as curator of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art from 1966 to 1972. An art critic, educator, and author, Nordland established himself in positions such as Los Angeles editor of Artforum, dean of the Chouinard Art Institute from 1960-1964, and director of the Washington Gallery of Modern Art in Washington D.C. During his years as curator at SFMOMA, Nordland was responsible for a major increase in acquisitions, the first cataloguing of the museum collection, a new found focus on the museum's permanent collection, and expansive renovations including the construction of a conservation laboratory.
