Footnotes

  • Accompanied by certificate of authenticity #GE2001-426 dated January 14, 2002, stating that the bangle bracelet is a genuine Cartier item.

This unusual bracelet, possibly intended for the upper arm, is an example of Cartier's work in the Persian taste. By the 1930s, the vogue for Indian and Persian jewelry, which Cartier had helped create, stimulated the re-emerging taste for gold. The bracelet's bold decorative design of a stylized hunt scene, likely derived from Louis Cartier's superb collection of Persian manuscripts and miniatures, resembles that of the enameled gold case made to special order of Mrs. Virginia Vanderbilt in 1932. See Rudoe, July, Cartier 1900-1939, New York, 1997, page 168. The Lavabre workshop, which produced this bracelet, was entrusted by Cartier with detailed work from 1906 until the late 1930s. Lavabre executed many important commissions for Cartier, such as the Daisy Fellowes "Hindu Collar" (1936).
