Footnotes

  • Despite the size, this model was considerably smaller than the previous generation valve computers. In 1949, the 'Manchester Baby' valve computer successfully calculated multiple figures, but took up the best part of an entire room.
The technicians at Friden immediately saw the advantage of the new transistor technology originally dreamt up in America and started work on an all-chip calculator in late 1955.

A full six months before one of their rivals were at prototype stage with an all-transistor calculator, they released this - the Friden 130, in early 1956 to great applause and surprise at the short time it took. With a time delay of just 4 milliseconds to generate a result to four decimal places, this time delay was only beaten by the Sinclair calculators of the late 1970s.
