Footnotes

  • Laid down in 1937 and launched in 1940, the Yamato Class mounted the largest (18in.) main armament ever seen on a modern warship, capable of firing a 1395kg projectile nearly 30km. Two vessels of the class were completed; the Yamato and the Musashi, with a third vessel being converted to an aircraft carried before launching. Both were casualties to American forces in WW2; the Musashi in 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Yamato a year later.
