A silver presentation cigarette box, - Hon.A Morton Weir, Bank Line.
Inscribed on the lid: Presented to the Hon. A Morton Weir by the staff (associated with Birklands) of Messrs. Andrew Weir & Co. as a token of their regard and appreciation of the many kindnesses and considerations shown while resident at "Birklands" St Albans during the War Years 1939-1945. Gilt interior with wooden liner. Hallmarked London 1945, 28oz. approximately. 6.6x4.5x2ins. (17x11.5x5cm)

Footnotes

  • Andrew Weir (1856-1955), a Scottish businessman, started his ship owning company in 1885 naming it the Bank Line after his first vessel the Willowbank. Originally based in Glasgow, the Company moved it's headquarters to London in 1905. He was invited to join the Government in WW1 and retired from the management of the Company in 1919, handing over to his son, the Hon. Andrew Morton Weir.
    At the start of WW2, the Girls of Birklands Boarding School near St Albans were evacuated and their premises were taken over by Andrew Weir & Co. who moved their London staff away from the Blitz, returning the building to the School in 1945.
