LAFAYETTE, MARIE-JOSEPH PAUL YVES ROCH GILBERT DU MORTIER. 1757-1834. Autograph Letter (fragment), 2 pp recto and verso, 8vo (cut down),
LAFAYETTE, MARIE-JOSEPH. 1757-1834.
Autograph Letter (fragment), 2 pp recto and verso, 8vo (cut down), Fredericksburg, VA, April 25, 1781, discussing the arrival of the British near Petersburg and the movement of French troops, lower portion of leaf lacking, some cuts at folds, mounting remnants to verso, overall toning, matted and framed to 23 1/4 x 18 inches.

An intriguing fragment of a Revolutionary War-date letter from Lafayette, reading in part: "received a letter from Governor Jefferson, dated last night, wherein he informs me that the Enemy had landed Near Petersberg and were advancing to that place. What opposition have have you been able to make ... The Enemy ... being said to intend a visit to Richmond the Frenchmen will advance towards that place until intelligence from you enable me more certainly to determine its movements." The lower portion of this letter almost certainly fell victim to the 19th century fad for clipped signatures.
