WRIGHT, JOHN BUCKLAND, illustrator.
MALLARME, STEPHANE. L'Apres-midi d'un faune. [London & Waltham Saint Lawrence, Berkshire: John Buckland Wright & the Golden Cockerel Press, 1936, 1956 & 1972.]
Folio (291 x 209). 4 collotype & 5 engraved plates by Wright. Original vellum with gilt lettering and decoration, t.e.g., by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, green cloth folder and slipcase. Fine.
LIMITED EDITION, "G" of 23 copies with a separate set of loose engravings. This was to be the third of Wright's private editions and he had the sheets printed in Holland in 1936 while he worked on the illustrations. The sheets remained inaccessible until after the war, but Wright seemed to have moved on. Two years after his death in 1954, the Golden Cockerel Press published an English translation of the work using four wash drawings found by Wright's widow, reproducing them in collotype. Years later she was persuaded to use the remaining French sheets combined with the Golden Cockerel Press collotypes and 5 unused trial engravings and have it bound in vellum by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. A transcript of a letter from Mary Buckland Wright detailing the history of the book is included.
