15 volumes. 8vo. 2 large folding maps, numerous photographic plates throughout, and extra-illustrated with approximately 200 watercolors on silk plates, on title pages, and in the margins of the text. Full green levant morocco, five raised bands with gilt rule and floral devices in panels, covers featuring a chain of large five-pointed gilt flowers (including six with red-morocco inlay) within broad gilt-ruled margins, center panel on upper covers featuring a landscape in gilt with mountain, boats, flowers, and with the figure of a woman in a red morocco-inlaid robe on a dock dock at center, morocco doublures with large gilt and morocco-inlaid floral design, silk floral endpapers, edges gilt. Spines sunned, joints and spine ends rubbed, loss to morocco inlay on spine panels, upper cover of three volumes detached with one other starting, internally fine.

EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED EDITION ON JAPANESE VELLUM, IN DELUXE BINDING. One of an unknown number of copies, "Special Extra Illustrated Copy / Printed Decorated and Bound for" with subscriber's name blank on limitation sheet of Volume 1. Magnificently and profusely illustrated with watercolors, of birds, flora, landscapes, and human figures, many on silk and many signed. Only three copies of the 15 volume extra-illustrated edition appear in ABPC; none in the last 20 years.
