LEARY, TIMOTHY. 1920-1996.
"Terra II Program Plan." [Folsom (or Vacaville) Prison, California: c.1974].
4to. Typed manuscript with Annotations, 10 pp + "Terra II Schedule Plan" insert in manuscript. Annotations in blue ink and pencil in an unknown hand, drippings from candle wax to first page, some minor wear at corners.
Provenance: Joanna Harcourt-Smith.

AN APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED TYPED MANUSCRIPT WITH ANNOTATIONS IN LEARY'S HAND, in which Leary outlines the necessary steps "to make biological and neurological contact with extraterrestrial intelligence" (1), a project whose philosophical purposes Leary laid out in Terra II (1973). The manuscript articulates the mission objective, pre-flight development site, system requirements, and phases of the program, and details a plan for a starship simulator and test program. From Phase I: "If the Terra II payload includes living biological speciman from Terra I, and a representative sample of Terra I surface includ[es] lakes, and streams, then this clearly calls for the continuous presence of a gravitational environment on board the starship. This environment presently is available by spinning the starship or by providing continuous thrust from the starship's engines." Inserted is a sheet of lined paper on which is diagrammed, in Leary's hand, a "Terra II Schedule Plan."
The present lot includes a copy of the first edition of Terra II: The Starseed Transmission, [San Francisco: Imprinting Press, 1974], worn and heavily underlined, inscribed: "I published this book while Timothy Leary was in Vacaville prison / 1974 / Joanna Leary." Horowitz A16.
