Original pink cloth; dust jacket. Light spots on front free endpaper, slight insect damage at lower pastedown, some overall sunning, jacket toned with chip to spine panel head.
PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED FOR CHARLES THOMPSON and his wife on the front free endpaper: "For Lorine and Charles / with love from Ernest / Key West/ September 20, 1957." Charles Thompson was born and raised in Key West, Florida and owned a succession of stores there. He met Hemingway in 1928 and the two were hunting, fishing, and drinking buddies for decades. In 1934, Thompson accompanied Hemingway on safari and was one of the few men who out-shot him. Hemingway identified Thompson as the character "Karl" in Green Hills of Africa. Harry Morgan in To Have and Have Not is also reminiscent of Charles. Pauline Hemingway and Lorine Thompson were close friends as well.
