Chandler writes to Carter, an associate at the Hollywood literary agency which represented him, to clear up a few points about his contract with CBS for radio and television rights to a show featuring Philip Marlowe. At stake is a clause granting CBS a period of time - 18 weeks or 26 weeks - in which they retain licensing rights in the event they discontinue production of the show, and Chandler scrutinizes its details and parses its legalese as fluidly as any contract lawyer. He writes, "I can't see that it has any meaning unless the requirement is that CBS give notice within that 18 weeks of their intention to recommence broadcasting and that such recommencing of broadcasting must actually commence within the 26-week period." He follows the twisting logic of the clause for three dense pages, arguing strenuously against its implications ("it was certainly not our intention to gamble the whole thing for a year on a mere eleven weeks of radio broadcasting") before concluding, "Let me hear what you think about all this.
