FIRST EDITION. Watelet, a wealthy dilettante, was elected to the Académie française on the strength of this didactic poem. The second half of the work is decorated with his vignettes, for he was a talented etcher. Diderot said that if he had a copy of Watelet's poem he would cut out the illustrations and frame them under glass, and throw the rest in the fire.
