2 volumes. Folio (420 x 280 mm). [iv], 4, xii, 268; [iv], 251, [3] pp. Additional engraved title, 3 maps hand-colored in outline, 143 plates (11 of which are hand-colored, 6 in sepia), double-page letterpress table. Period half calf. Very occasional faint foxing, covers detached.
Provenance: Alexander Brown Griswold [1907-1991] (bookplates).

FIRST EDITION. Langles abandoned a military career to study Eastern cultures. In this, the most important of his publications albeit unfinished, he studies the archaeological and aesthetic aspects of Hindu monuments comparing them to other monuments, including those in Egypt and Morocco.
