1. The Ferns of British India. Madras: Gantz Brothers, 1866. 2 volumes plus supplement in one. With 345 lithographed plates, plus supplement of 45 additional plates. Later half morocco preserving period spine. Light toning, title creased, with first title page only, lightly rubbed.
Provenance: Edmund Giles Loder [1849-1920] (bookplate); Kenneth K. Mackenzie, New York lawyer and amateur botanist; bequeathed in 1934 to Library of the Horticultural Society of New York (bookplate recording bequest, issue ticket on lower pastedown, one or two pencil annotations); Christie's New York, June 5, 1997, lot 428.
2. The Ferns of Southern India. Madras: Higginbotham, 1873. With 172 lithographed plates. Cloth-backed original printed boards. Some pencil annotations, rubbed.
Provenance: indistinct ownership inscription on title; part of the Mackenzie Bequest to the Horticultural Society of New York (bookplate); with Bernard Quaritch, October 1980 (pencil annotation).
Both 4to (300 x 230 mm).
FIRST EDITION of the first work, second edition of the second. After a brief military career, Beddome became chief conservator of the Madras Forest Department, and many species were named in his honor.
