[BEATO, FELICE. 1832-1909.]
Panorama of Lucknow taken from the Great Imambara, 8 lightly albumenized prints joined, each 9½ x 11 inches, 1858, captioned on verso in ink and with several sites identified in pencil on verso, 3 joins with minor loss.
Provenance: likely purchased by W.J.H. in India in 1858; with Maggs, December, 1959; thence by descent.
Almost 8 feet long, Beato's panorama depicts the ravaged city of Lucknow in vivid detail. He arrived in the city in March of 1858, just days after the British had finally routed the rebel sepoys who had previously lain siege to the Residency. "Large sectors of a once radiant and sparkling city were reduced to rubble" during the conflict (Llewellyn-Jones Lucknow: City of Illusion p 7).
