[BEATO, FELICE. 1832-1909.] Panorama of Delhi taken from the Jamma Masjid,
[BEATO, FELICE. 1832-1909.]
Panorama of Delhi taken from the Jamma Masjid, 9 lightly albumenized prints joined, each 10 x 12 inches, 1858, titled on verso in ink twice, long pencil annotation on verso, 6 sites captioned on recto very unobtrusively in pencil at top edge, 3 small segments of loss at folds, 1½-inch tear at bottom edge without loss, some separation at one fold.
Provenance: W.J.H. ("Bought on the spot... 1858," ink annotation on verso; lengthy pencil annotation on verso, added to in 1888 remarking that the earlier notes were made on the spot); with Maggs, December, 1959; thence by descent.

"Felice Beato started to make panoramas early in his career, and they became one of his specialties.... The panorama's large size and sweeping scope afforded the illusion of continuity in time and thus could convey a sense of narrative" (Lacoste Felice Beato: A Photographer on the Eastern Road pp 8-9). As in Lucknow (see below), Beato used the high vantage point of a minaret, this time at the Jamma Masjid, Delhi's principal mosque.
