HAND-COLORED EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY JAPANESE WORLD MAP. This map is derived from a 1602 map by Italian missionary Matteo Ricci in China; that map became the basis for the first modern Japanese world map created in 1645, and inspired many variants until more up-to-date maps were created after Dutch models at the beginning of the nineteenth century. An example of the present map, with variant coloring, exists in the Beans collection at the University of British Columbia.
