ITALY—JOURNAL & SKETCHBOOK.
FREEMAN, HENRY. Manuscript Journal, 188 pp recto and verso, entitled: "Description of the Antiquities within the Territories of Pozzoli, Cuma, Baia, Misenum &c. the whole within ten miles of the City of Naples," 4to, dated 1758, in brown ink on red-ruled paper, contemporary pagination, plus 26 FULL-PAGE FINISHED PENCIL DRAWINGS captioned in ink, a folding frontispiece manuscript plan of Pozzoli (linen-backed) and a folding plan of a newly-discovered temple nearby. Period mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments. Gap in pagination (71-76) but with no apparent loss of text, binding slightly dry, edges rubbed, joints started, spine label lacking.
Provenance: Charles Kemeys Kemeys Tynte [1778-1860] (armorial bookplate).

Very attractive and thorough manuscript account with meticulous drawings and plans. The subtitle explains that the text is partly a translation of the Italian of [Pompeo] Sarnelli and partly from the author's own observations made between the years of 1751 and 1757.
