An unusual French silvered and gilt brass great wheel skeleton timepiece with day, date and lunar calendar
Early 19th century
In the form of a colonnade with pierced and gilt columns each surmounted by a biscuit putto, flanking a finely pierced frieze of inhabited foliate scrolls, supporting a pierced wire work urn, all on similarly engraved oval base raised on gilt leaf and acorn feet, annular white enamel arabic chapter ring bordered by minute scales repeated at each hour interval, single pierced gilt scroll hand indicating both minutes and hours, in the center, four subsidiary rings, two of which revolve to indicate the day and its ruling deity, the other two fixed, indicating date and age of moon by means of pierced scroll hands, movement with pierced arched brass frame united by four screwed pillars, delicate wheelwork with "Y" crossings and wolf's teeth, anchor escapement with thread suspended pendulum. 16 in.
