Footnotes

  • The 1880s ushered in a revival of Gothic literature and imagery in Europe relating to the widespread civil disillusionment and cynicism at the end of the 19th century. Ivanhoe's guise of 'Desdichado', the disinherited one, captured the zeitgeist of the period.

It is possible that British sculptor Charles Bell Birch, A.R.A. (1832-1893) designed the shield as he was commissioned by Hancocks on several occasions to create various presentation pieces and trophies.
