Footnotes

  • Kim Tschang-Yeul was born in Seoul and studied in the Fine Arts Department of Seoul National University from 1948-1950. One of the founding members of the Contemporary Arts Association in 1960, he and his circle of artists modeled their works on the American and European Abstract Expressionist painters and paintings seen in Seoul in the late 1950s. While living in New York from 1965 to 1969, his paintings showed the influence of Pop Art, Color and Field and the Minimalist movements. After a move to Paris in 1970, Mr. Kim became fascinated with the effects of light and reflection on water drops. His first water drop paintings were shown in a Paris exhibition in 1973 and have appeared in subsequent exhibitions and collections in the United States, Europe and Asia. For a recent study of his career and paintings, see Soon Chun Soo and Barbara Bloemik, The Color of Nature: Monochrome Art in Korea (New York, Assouline, 2008), pp. 40-63.
