Footnotes

  • Kim Chong-Hak was born in North Korea in 1937. He received his bachelor of Fine Arts from Seoul National University in 1962, at a time when the younger generation of Korean artists were creating works inspired by American and European Abstract Expressionism. In subsequent years, his abstract works appeared in major painting exhibitions held in Korea, Brazil, Paris and Tokyo. However personal tragedy caused him to abandon abstraction and city life, moving in 1979 to the seclusion of Mt. Seorak. His subsequent studies of nature and seasonal landscape provided a new model for contemporary painting that continues today. A retrospective of his works was held at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, in 2011.

For a discussion of the influence of Abstract Expressionism on Korean artists such as Kim Chong-Hak and Kim Tschang-Yeul in the years after the Korean Conflict, see Kim Yong-Na, 20th Century Korean Art (London, Laurence King, 2005), pp. 38-41.
