A pagoda-style bronze lantern
Meiji period (late 19th century)
Set on a circular base decorated on the sides with panels of gamboling shishi and on the top with minogame swimming in waves, the pedestal wrapped by a coiling dragon flaring out to a band of elephant heads supporting the lantern housing, pierced with Tokugawa family crests among twisting blossoms plum trees and birds, the hinged door with a latch cast as a warbler in flight, the gabled roof ending in Chinese-stye beast flourishes suspending bells, the roof decorated with Tokugawa crests, all surmounted by a flaming sacred jewel
