Ex: S.S. Central America, Variety 20A, Spiked Shield. A frosty and brilliant honey-gold Gem with exceptional eye appeal and lively orange and olive highlights. The luster is superb with broadly sweeping cartwheel activity in full bloom. From the S.S. Central America treasure hoard. The ill-fated ship went down in a terrible hurricane in September 1857 with great loss of life and property; the treasure was recovered in the late 20th century. Before the dispersal of the treasure, the 1857-S double eagle was a date to be reckoned with, but thousands of examples were recovered and made available to the numismatic community. However, of the thousands of pieces offered, only a tiny amount was of the remarkable Gem quality offered here. A custom made presentation box is included with this lot. (PCGS 70000)
