1891-CC $1
VAM-3, Top 100 Variety, "Spitting Eagle." From a later die state with the expectorating raptor's globule smaller than typically seen, no doubt from die wear. Luxurious frosty luster bathes otherwise brilliant surfaces. Sharply struck, and uncommonly smooth with nary a distracting abrasion in evidence. A fairly generous mintage of 1.6 million pieces conceals the fact that the 1891-CC is one of the scarcer, more conditionally challenging issues in the Carson City Mint Morgan dollar series. Comparatively few examples survived in government vaults, a perfect example being the total of just 5,687 pieces that were distributed through the various GSA sales of 1972 to 1980.
