A cast bronze bell (bianzhong)
Dated by inscription to 1738
Of tapered cylindrical section suspended by a reticulated handle of abstract design, with both sides supporting eighteen raised bosses surrounding vertical inscriptions: one side bearing a date within a rectangular cartouche reading Qianlong san nian zhong dong ji dan zhi ('cast on the first day of the eleventh month during the third year of the Qianlong reign') the reverse inscription denoting its pitch, rui bin shang, and its place of manufacture and/or use, san shui xian xue ('the Sanshui prefecture academy').

  • Ruibin is the seventh of the twelve traditional Chinese musical tones. The Sanshui (sometimes transliterated 'Samsui') prefecture was located in the Guangdong province near Foshan.
