2 volumes. 8vo (210 x 126 mm). 390; [iv], 362,  pp. 2 engraved folding maps, 3 folding engraved plates. Modern half green levant over cloth, spine gilt, t.e.g., by Zaehnsdorf. Uncut, some faint spots, but generally clean, spines sunned to brown, an attractive copy.
FIRST COMPLETE AUTHORIZED EDITION. "Constitutes the first trustworthy record of life in the United States" (Howes). The Marquis de Chastellux first had the notes from his travels printed in an abbreviated form on one the ships in the French squadron at Newport, Rhode Island (about 24 copies). A pirated edition was issued in 1785 with material carelessly assembled from his journal entries that appeared in the periodical Gotha. This edition includes considerably more material than the previous works. Howes C324; Sabin 12227.
