- The Society was founded in 1890 by Armand Struve, with the first trolley cars in operation from August 1891. By the early 20th century, the horse-drawn trolleys had evolved into electric trams when trials with steam power failed.
Armand Yegorovich Struve (1835-1898) was a prominent military engineer, part-owner of a family foundry and credited with the Struve Railroad Bridge as well as developing a horse-pulled and electric tramway for Kiev.
