the ovoid quatrefoil body applied to obverse with tram against white ground inscribed in Cyrillic 'Society of the Kiev City Rail Line', dated '1891' below crowned shield, the reverse with 'A. E. Struve', electrified winged wheel emblem and named recipient 'O.K.Korkhov', 56 standard

  • The Society was founded in 1890 by Armand Struve, with the first trolley cars in operation from August 1891. By the early 20th century, the horse-drawn trolleys had evolved into electric trams when trials with steam power failed.

    Armand Yegorovich Struve (1835-1898) was a prominent military engineer, part-owner of a family foundry and credited with the Struve Railroad Bridge as well as developing a horse-pulled and electric tramway for Kiev.
