Footnotes

  • Born in 1838 to a middle-class family in Roslavl, Kryukov was an observing student at the Academy of Arts from 1854-1869. During this period he was awarded a number of medals and in 1867 he was decorated with the gold medal for his composition The Death of Oleg. In 1869, he graduated from the Academy as an artist of the 2nd rank and was received into the 1st rank in 1880 for his portrait of N. Melnikov.

    From 1860 onwards, Kryukov participated in exhibitions, showing his portraits, illustrations and paintings on biblical subjects. His series of drawings Pictures illustrating the teaching of the sacred stories of the Old and New Testament are held in the National Library of Russia in St. Petersburg.
