based on the hymn to the Mother of God written by John of Damascus and sung during the liturgy of St. Basil the Great: For you, full of grace, all of creation rejoices: the choir of angels and the family of man; the Virgin is depicted enthroned in heaven, against an elaborate church and flanked by a choir of angels and fantastic plants, all within a circular aureole; below, ranks of prophets, hierarchs and monks, led by St. John the Baptist, whilst at the foot of the Virgin's throne two Saints hold up unfurled scrolls
