Footnotes

  • Engraved with the crest of BRANDENBURG ensigned by an Electoral Crown.

The use of the crest in this way was commonplace and regular British practice but most uncommon in Germany at this time.

At the Assay date the Margraves of Brandenburg had risen to be Kings in Prussia, then Kings of Prussia, and hence entitled to a crown of supreme status. As the Kings still continued to exercise their duties and responsibilities as Electors of the Holy Roman Emperor we conjecture that these goblets were British-designed gifts of the King (in his capacity as Elector) as part of some of diplomatic courtesy.
