  • The present chairs are based on a design by Hepplewhite illustrated in the first edition of The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, pl. 9. They also closely relate to a Gillows 'Estimate Sketchbook' drawing for a 'five-splat chair with camel back stay rail', supplied to Mrs Chadwick in December 1785 (see Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, 2008, p. 165, p. pl. 123).
