Footnotes

  • Provenance: This bust was given to the present vendor by the grandson of Philip Eliot, a former Dean of Windsor.

Arguably best known for his figure of Nelson for Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, E.H. Baily also produced reliefs for Marble Arch, the National Gallery and Buckingham Palace. Baily studied under the important sculptor Jonn Flaxman and was employed in his studio for seven years. In 1808 he won a Silver Medal from the Society of Arts, and joined the Royal Academy in the same year, winning the gold medal there in 1811. In 1821 Baily was elected a Royal Academician, his diploma work being a portrait of his former Master, Flaxman. Baily produced numerous other portrait busts and monuments including a bust of Prince Albert in 1841 which was commissioned by Queen Victoria the year before.
Rupert Gunnis lists many of Baily's busts, but unfortunately, none that were executed in 1849, and so we can only speculate as to who the sitter may be.

The ecclesiastical garments worn by the sitter, the Windsor provenance and the date of 1849 suggest that the sitter may be the Dean of Windsor at that time, George Neville Grenville, who was Dean from 1846 to 1854.
