Footnotes

  • Provenance: Headfort House, Kells, Co. Meath. Probably Sir Thomas Taylour, Viscount Headfort and 2nd Earl of Bective (1757-1829), created Marquess of Headfort.
    Thence by descent.

Headfort House was built between 1760 and 1770 by Sir Thomas Taylour 1st Lord Headfort and later 1st Earl Bective to designs by George Semple, between 1760 and 1770. The sparing style of the exterior facades represented a cost saving measure, so that expenditure could be prioritized for the formal rooms, although Headfort had contemplated proposals by Sir William Chambers. The exuberant neo-classical interiors feature principal rooms executed to designs by Robert Adam between 1771 and 1776. Headfort is the only house in Ireland where Adam's architectural work survives in its entirety. Adam drawings for the house are preserved in the Mellon collection in the U.S.A. and others are located at the Sir John Soane Museum, London. Headfort was remained in Taylour family ownership until 1949 after which the major part of the building was leased out for use as a school. In 1996, ownership was passed to The Headfort Trust and the lease for Headfort school continued.
