A George II carved mahogany double chair back settee
by Joseph Pember snr
The double chair backs with scroll acanthus carved top-rails above pierced splats with pierced roundel decoration and large projecting paper scrolls to the reverse of the splat, with a drop-in seat on moulded arms with scroll terminals and inswept supports, the drop-in seat, on short shell carved cabriole legs and pad feet, stamped twice on the inside back leg, 'PEMBER', 160cm wide, (62.5" wide).

  • Joseph Pember snr of Worcester is listed as working from 1741 to 1766. He worked for the Bateman family of Shobden Court, Leominster, Herefordshire (1747-48). (See G.Beard & C.Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, p.688).

    A closely related settee in walnut with a single pierced splat rather than the double chair back was in the collection of Lord Doverdale, Westwood Park, Worcestershire and is illustrated in J.C Rogers and M.Jourdain, English Furniture, London, 1950, p.126, pl.79. An open armchair with a similar acanthus carved paper-scroll top-rail and pierced roundel decorated splat from the estate of the late Caroline, Lady Hobart, formally the Duchess of Leeds was sold Bonhams 27 June 2006, lot 82.
